Day 2 - 8/04/2018 - Manila and the Christening


Not the best pick for the first hotel of our stay, at the Sofitel Manila. The one positive was the view of Manila Bay and the swimming pool which the kids enjoyed.

Then it was time for the christening of baby Andhra, both Malayah and Isaac are godparents.

Day 19 - 25/04/2018 - Halong Bay to Hanoi

Halong Bay is peaceful and relaxing and the boat we are on is beautiful. There seems to be a combination of cloud and pollution in the sky and I wonder if it is the time of year or if it ever really gets clear blue skies. The main disappointment for me though was the amount of rubbish floating around in the water, there is a lot of it and it does spoil it a bit. When woke this morning it had been raining overnight,  after knocking on the kids door a few times with no answer I went and did the morning Tai Chi class on the top deck of the boat, Malayah was very disappointed to have slept in and missed it. However there was one more excursion we could do before heading back to land, swimming or hiking. Due to the rubbish in the water I didn't think swimming would be a good idea so the boys chose to stay on the boat and Malayah and I went and hiked the 400 steep steps to the top of Tip Top Island. Day 14 - 20/04/2018 - Hoi An, cycling, fishing, lanterns and the beach

Another tour on the bikes, today we rode about 14kms and along the roads which was an experience. There is constant beeping of horns here, basically whoever beeps first is taking the right of way or they are beeping to let you know they are passing you. Waiting at the traffic light which counts down until it is turning green, the number in the photo is actually an 8 More art made from coconut leaves On the basket boats again. These waterways through the water coconuts were used during the Vietnam war, soldiers would hide amongst the water coconuts and sometimes bury themselves in the mud to keep out of site and all cool during the hot days. Fisherman still occasionally pull up bombs and other remnants from the war in their fishing nets. Day 12 - 18/04/2018 - Hoi An, Farmer and Fisherman tour

Today we spent most of the day doing a farmer and fisherman tour. We started off by cycling through the rice fields. This guy is illegally fishing with electrical rods used to get the fish out of the muddy banks. He was unsuccessful in the few minutes we stopped to watch. We stopped at an organic vegetable farm. The farm is owned and run by three sisters who work 10-12 hours out in the gardens every day. The oldest is 67 years old and has a hunched back from spending her life bent over working in the gardens. After cycling some more we stopped to meet a local rice farmer and his water buffalo which Malayah and I had a ride on. The farmer has his hands up like that as he was on his mobile phone!!!
