Day 14 - 20/04/2018 - Hoi An, cycling, fishing, lanterns and the beach

Another tour on the bikes, today we rode about 14kms and along the roads which was an experience. There is constant beeping of horns here, basically whoever beeps first is taking the right of way or they are beeping to let you know they are passing you.

Waiting at the traffic light which counts down until it is turning green, the number in the photo is actually an 8

More art made from coconut leaves

On the basket boats again.

These waterways through the water coconuts were used during the Vietnam war, soldiers would hide amongst the water coconuts and sometimes bury themselves in the mud to keep out of site and all cool during the hot days. Fisherman still occasionally pull up bombs and other remnants from the war in their fishing nets. There are still possible landmines buried in the mud.

Throwing the fishing net from the boat

Sams turn.....

As he threw the net his feet slipped and he fell, the fisherman grabbed him before he toppled out of the boat, it was very funny.

Watch it all happen in the video.

We then tried a different style of fishing with the net. A long net was let out and then they banged their paddles on the boats making noise I assume to attract the fish. After a few minutes they slowly pulled the net in.

Success....well sort of, one tiny fish caught, better than none

Heading back the lady who was paddling our boat decided to make Malayah and I coconut leaf hats, she held onto the basket boat in front using her toes to grip a rope so we were pulled along behind.

Back on the bikes we then rode to the Lantern making workshop to have a go at making a lantern of our own. The staff here work about 10 hours per day and make 200 lanterns each per day

This lady was putting small holes into each stick used to put the string through to create the lantern shape

Time for lunch, a tiny place filled with locals known for their chicken rice. Everything is ready to go so your meals arrive almost immediately after you sit down. Cost about $11 for the four of us for our meal and a drink each.

The boys then went back to the hotel and Malayah and I went shopping. I had a dress made, ordered at 1.30pm and ready by 5pm

We then went for a look at the beach.

Dinner tonight was at Purple Lantern, I wish we had come here sooner, food was delicious. The owner went out of her way to help us, Malayah wasn't feeling well and as soon as she noticed she brought her a ginger and lemon hot drink to sip and arranged and walked us to a taxi when we were done.
